Professionalism & 'The Accidental Manager'

What do we mean by professionalism in management, how do we develop those who come to management and leadership not by design but by circumstance, and where does executive education and apprenticeships fit?


Helen is a senior lecturer in leadership and HRM, and the Director of Education for Apprenticeships within this subject group. Helen's teaching focusses on practice related HRM at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. 

Helen’s professional practice was in senior HR management in the not-for-profit and arts sectors.  She has taught within HRM-related programmes in FE and HE for over a decade, and has specialised in the development of students’ academic and employability skills.

Helen holds a Doctorate in Education and a Masters in Human Resource Management.  She is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, is a Chartered Member of the Chartered Institute for Personnel and Development, and a Chartered Manager and Fellow of CMI. 

PEOPLE POWER is an event series dedicated to people:  to skills, training, HR, employment and workplace productivity.  


The 2022 conference is designed to help you focus on The People Agenda - to provide you and your team with the knowledge and skills that you need to ensure your workforce thrives, to improve performance, increase productivity and to help you compete effectively in the new world. 

The conference takes place 23 June at Northumbria University.
