It’s All About How We Use the Time We Have! - Kate Simpson, K8 Coaching and Consultancy

A lot of the work I do is about supporting leaders to work out how they can work smarter, not harder.

On the face of it this is easy stuff, right?

If we focus on using our time at work well we will do what needs to be done, when it needs to be done and, consequently, we will be efficient, productive, successful and happy. With the added benefits that once our work is done we will have plenty of time and energy left over for ourselves, our health and wellbeing, our communities, our friends and our families.

But if it was easy we’d all do it. Our businesses would thrive, we would thrive, and the world would be a better place!

So why don’t we just get on with it?

Well, in my view, there are other factors at play here.

Things like other people and other agendas.

And then there is us! We are really good at getting in our own way! Maybe you will recognise some of the things that make you less focused than you want to be? Procrastination, bright shiny objects (aka anything that looks more interesting than what needs to be done right now), mind monkeys, coffee & biscuits, the ‘too hard box’, inertia?

So how can we overcome some of these factors? How can we lead ourselves to be better at work, and indeed at life?

In my view we need to take a step back and ask ourselves a couple of really important questions.

The first one is what: What is my job, what do I need to do to succeed, what is success, what can I do that will make the a difference?

And the second one is how: How will I do that, how can I do my job well?

Then there are a few of really useful supplementary questions to ask yourself. What’s stopping me, how am I getting in my own way, what needs to change to make this possible?

And once you’ve done all that thinking it is time to put together a plan and work to that plan.

This has strong parallels with other things we do when we want to make changes in our lives; the diet plan to lose weight, the gym plan to build fitness and strength, the training plan for the Great North Run or even the Wedding Plan.

And, you know what? They all work if you follow them.

As a coach one of my magic powers is to support capable leaders to answer those questions, build those plans and turn them into results.
